WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Richmond field hockey team fell to the No. 15-ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 1-0, in a thrilling overtime contest Sunday afternoon at Kentner Stadium.
“Richmond had a tale of two halves against a talented Wake Forest squad,” commented head coach Gina Lucido. “Anna Zarkoski brought her best and led the team to a renewed second-half performance. Chelsea Davies and Samantha Ostoich fueled the Spiders' attacking momentum with gutsy play and passion. The theme of the season remains constant, as we will never stop short of the finish line regardless of the adversity we face.”
The Spiders' five-game winning streak was halted as they fall to 5-5 on the season, while the Deacons improve to 7-3 overall.
Richmond's strong defense held Wake Forest scoreless for the entire 70 minutes of regulation which forced overtime. Senior goalkeeper Anna Zarkoski was crucial in goal for the Spiders as she recorded seven saves on the day and faced 21 shots.
The game-winner came at the 74:48 mark from Wake Forest's Jess McFadyen that was unassisted.
This marks the second time the Spiders took a nationally ranked team to extra periods this season.
Richmond will return home after a four-game road swing Saturday, Oct. 5 when it hosts the Appalachian State Mountaineers at 12 p.m.
