Swim & Dive Edged By William & Mary On Senior Day

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond swimming and diving squad pushed until the end but was edged by the William & Mary Tribe, 151-143, on Senior Day Sunday afternoon at the Robins Center Natatorium.
The Spiders won four of the final five individual events to take a one-point lead, 139-138, before the last relay event. But the Tribe won the 400 medley relay to secure the dual meet victory.
Richmond sparked momentum after the sixth event, the 100 breaststroke. Senior Mali Kobelja won the first event for the Spiders, coming in at the 1:05.47 mark to lead a pack of three that took the top spots. Fellow senior Erin Brady followed in second (1:07.03) and freshman Jodi Thompson took third (1:07.29) to collect 16 points.
However, the 12th event, the 200 breaststroke, got the ball rolling in for Richmond as the Spiders collected 15 points and went 1-2-4. Brady won the event with a time of 2:23.25, while Meredith Gouger placed second at the 2:25.86 mark. Freshman Erin Dunstan came in fourth with a time of 2:27.12.
Two events later, Richmond won the 200 breaststoke, taking first and second. It was Brady again that won the event with a time of 2:23.25. Gouger placed second (2:25.86) and Dunstan followed in fourth (2:27.12) to give the Spiders 15 more points.
The 200 IM was the event to put the Spiders on top, 139-138, as Kobelja won her second event of the day. The senior touched the wall at the 2:06.35 mark to claim the victory, while Gouger followed in second (2:08.55) and Brady took third (2:09.83).
The Spiders collected 32 points with the help of the diving squad. Freshman Irina Chiulli won the 3-meter event with a score of 294.67, while Katherine Cook was victorious in the 1-meter event with score of 276.52.
Richmond will be back in action next weekend Sunday, Jan. 19 when it travels to A-10 opponent La Salle for a three-team dual meet that includes Fordham at 11 a.m.
