Swim & Dive Sweeps Tri-Meet In Philadelphia

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond swimming and diving squad swept the tri-meet this weekend, defeating La Salle (197-102) and Fordham (157-142) in Philadelphia, Pa.
The Spiders established themselves right from the start, going one and two in the 200 medley relay. After winning the first event Richmond claimed first place seven other times throughout the day.
Senior Mali Kobelja led the team winning the 100 backstroke (57.76), 200 breaststroke (2:20.97), and 200 IM (2:05.75). Following close behind Kobelja in the 100 backstroke were Natalya Ares and Rachel Dumez, who finished third (1:00.56) and fourth (1:00.58).
The 200 freestyle also proved to be a successful event for the Spiders, with Allison Titley (1:55.91), Anne Marie Bilott (1:57.90), Emma Terwilliger (1:58.34), and Maggie Pope (1:58.58) finishing third, fifth, sixth, and seventh. Pope was also able to secure a win for Richmond in the 200 backstroke, touching the wall with a time of 2:06.58.
Continuing its success, Richmond then claimed spots three through five in the 100 breaststroke. Jodie Thompson (1:08.52) led the way with Meredith Gouger (1:08.74) and Erin Brady (1:08.85) finishing right behind her.
Sophomore Kelly Yang got on the board, winning the 100 fly (55.92). Yang also took second in the 200 fly, leading the pack of three Spiders finishing in the top-five. Melissa Ross took third (2:07.30) and Mariel Kush took fifth (2:11.10).
Richmond dominated the 200 breaststroke. Kobelja won the event, while Erin Brady and Meredith Gouger touched the wall in third (2:26.39) and fourth (2:27.47).
The Spiders diving squad also won both of its events. Freshman Irina Chiulli took first in both, scoring 273.05 in the 3-meter and 266.15 in the 1-meter. Junior Katherine Cook also dove well for Richmond, taking third in the 1-meter (232.80).
Richmond will be back in action next weekend Saturday, Jan. 25 when it travels to Durham, N.C., to face Duke.
