GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Junior guard Kendall Anthony scored his 1,000th career point as No. 12 Florida edged Richmond in Gainesville, 67-58, on Saturday afternoon.
Anthony scored 15 points on 6-of-14 shooting, while senior guard Cedrick Lindsay led the Spiders (10-5) with a team-high 19 points in the hard-fought loss. Florida improved to 11-2 with the victory.
Richmond withstood an early Florida surge in the first half, closing the first period with a flourish of their own. The Spiders ended the first 20 minutes on a 7-2 run, as No. 12 Florida led by just two at halftime, 25-23.
Early in the second half, back-to-back treys from Anthony and Lindsay gave the Spiders their first two leads of the game. Lindsay's long-distance shot from the left corner gave Richmond a 29-27 advantage just two minutes in to the half.
Later in the half, Lindsay and the Spiders went on a 6-0 run to take a 35-31 lead in Gainesville. Lindsay buried a pair of tough runners in the paint, while Alonzo Nelson-Ododa hit a jumper to complete the run.
After the Gators responded to take a short-lived lead, Anthony converted an and-1 layup to push the Spider advantage back to four points, 46-42.
Still leading in Gainesville with under five minutes left, 50-49, the No. 12-ranked Gators used a 9-0 run to take a lead it would not surrender.
Richmond will continue its season-long four-game road trip on Wednesday with the Spiders will face St. Bonaventure. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
