10/11/2014 | Field Hockey
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond field hockey team was edged by the No. 3-ranked Virginia Cavaliers, 2-1, Friday in the first ever night game at Crenshaw Field.
Despite the two goals, the Spider defense was close to perfection as it held a team that averages 3.77 goals per game, which ranks second in the country, scoreless until the 51st minute.
Richmond (7-6) was the first on the board as the offense opened up for the Spiders in the second half. Junior Amy Cooke executed a flawless corner that was set up by junior Avery Safford and senior Helen Warner at the 42:55 mark.
The Cavaliers (11-3) retaliated at the 50:01 mark off a corner that was taken by Tara Vittese and tied the score at one.
Richmond interrupted Virginia's momentum with a break away down field 12 minutes later that ended with senior Rebecca Barry firing from the right side but Jenny Johnstone was there to make the stop.
The Cavaliers then went ahead in the 65th minute as Vittese made an unassisted goal that slipped passed Richmond's goalkeeper Kelley Wentling that eventually secured the game.
Wentling played all 70 minutes in goal for the Spiders and registered three saves, Johnstone recorded the win for the Cavaliers as she stopped two Richmond shots.
The Spiders will return to Crenshaw Field Sunday, Oct. 12 when they welcome Saint Louis to campus at 12 p.m.
