10/12/2014 | Field Hockey
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Senior Rebecca Barry's four goals paced the Richmond field hockey team in the 5-0 shutout over the Saint Louis Billikens Sunday afternoon at Crenshaw Field. Freshman Jessica Bishop also found the back of the cage for the Spiders.
“We are really pleased with the conference win,” commented Barry. “UVA was a very tough game for us, we were very disappointed afterwards to be honest. But we treated Saint Louis just how we treated UVA. We prepared as professionally as we could and today we came out quite strong and we proved that in the circle and we are very pleased with the win.”
Barry's four goals marks a career-high for the Limerick, Ireland native and sits tied for second all-time in a game at Richmond. She now sits fourth all-time in goals (52) and in points (127) in the Spider record book.
“It is great fun scoring goals,” Barry added. “I am just delighted that we are actually scoring them now. We struggled at the beginning of the season and we have really put a lot of focus on our goal scoring. I think we actually have a lot more work to do because there were so many opportunities that went missed and we are going to keep plugging away. To get five today was definitely great.”
The senior midfielder hit her first three goals in the first half, including the first coming three minutes into the contest, while Bishop recorded the final Richmond goal for her first-career goal.
The Spiders dominated from start to finish as they outshot the Billikens, 26-3, and took the 10-1 corner advantage. Barry led both teams with 11 shots and seven on goal, while junior Amy Cooke followed with four shots, two on goal and two assists.
The scoring drive opened up for Richmond at the 3:08 mark when sophomore Emma Johansson intercepted a SLU pass, brought it into the circle and fired at cage. Barry came in to deflect it over the Billiken keeper for make it a 1-0 ball game three minutes in.
Barry then notched two more goals in a two-minute span. She fired one at the 21:25 mark that was assisted by Cooke, then an unassisted goal at the 23:35 mark to give the Spiders the 3-0 lead at halftime.
Five minutes into the second period, Cooke brought the ball down field and served the ball into the circle from the left side that Barry deflected into the cage to give Richmond the 4-0 lead at the 39:30 mark.
After two more Spider shots, Bishop connected off a pass from senior Allison Siegel for her first-career goal as a Spider in the 53rd minute to cap off the Richmond scoring drive.
Saint Louis received its only corner as the clock ran out. On the final play of the day, junior defender Allison Haas completed the shutout as she came up with her fifth defensive save of the season that ended regulation.
Senior Kelley Wentling recorded her sixth win of the season as she played all 70 minutes in goal and notched two saves for her fourth shutout this season. Tori Westhead recorded the loss for SLU and stopped 10 shots on goal.
With the win, the Spiders improved to 8-6 on the season and 4-1 in the A-10, while Saint Louis fell to 2-12 overall and 0-5 in the league.
Richmond will return to action Friday, Oct. 17 when it travels to Saint Francis at 3 p.m.
