Johansson Lifts Spider Hockey Over Red Flash, 1-0
10/17/2014 | Field Hockey
LORETTO, Pa. – Sophomore Emma Johansson helped lift the Richmond field hockey team over Saint Franics Red Flash, 1-0, at DeGol Field. Johansson sealed the deal in the 67th minute.
"Today was a huge day for the Spiders," commented Richmond head coach Gina Lucido. "The team was able to seize a needed win against a strong opponent to keep the race for first place alive in the conference. Their ability to handle playing on a non-traditional surface was excellent."
With the win, Richmond improved to 9-6 overall and 5-1 in the A-10, while Saint Francis fell to 10-2 on the season and 3-2 in the conference.
The game-winner was recorded at the 66:27 when freshman Kasey Gilbride found Johansson wide open after the Red Flash keeper Samantha Zeiders came out of the cage.
The Spiders notched their second-straight shutout this season as senior Kelley Wentling stopped all seven shots on goal from the Red Flash to pick up her fifth shutout of the season. Richmond has shut out six teams so far this year.
"Kelley Wentling was clutch in defending the goal to the final whistle and coming up with big saves," added Lucido. "Sam Ostoich just back from injury made huge momentum plays for the Spiders. It was an awesome team win and I am so proud of their resilience."
Spider hockey will continue on the road this weekend and face Drexel Sunday, Oct. 19 at 12 p.m.
