10/19/2014 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Richmond field hockey team was edged by the Drexel Dragons, 2-1, in a shootout Sunday afternoon at Buckley Field. Senior Samantha Ostoich found the back of the cage for the Spiders.
After a scoreless first period, the Richmond (9-7) offense opened up when junior Amy Cooke set up Ostoich for the first goal of the contest at the 42:20 mark.
The Spiders held on to the lead until the 64th minute when Idrienne Walker slipped one past Richmond goalkeeper Kelley Wentling to tie the score at one and force the extra periods.
Richmond created an opportunity in the first overtime when freshman Megan Miller fired on frame at the 77:25 mark, but the Drexel (X-X) goalkeeper Jantlen Gunter was there to make the save.
In the 88th minute, Wentling forced the shootout when she came up with a huge save when the Dragon offense fired its only shot on goal in the second overtime.
Lindsay Stevens, Cooke, Rebecca Barry and Kelly Quinn all attempted in the shootout, but Barry was the lone Spider to connect. Drexel made three strokes to secure the win.
Barry and Miller led the Spiders with two shots each, while Wentling came up with four saves on the day.
The Spiders return home for the rest of the season and host Lock Haven on Friday, Oct. 24 at 4 p.m.
