Early Goal Lifts Lock Haven Over Spider Hockey
10/24/2014 | Field Hockey
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – An early goal in the sixth minute lefted Lock Haven over the Richmond field hockey team, 1-0, in A-10 action Friday afternoon at Crenshaw Field.
“We are in championship time of the year and every game matters,” commented Richmond head coach Gina Lucido. “This was one of those matchups that depending on who won would secure being in that top seed in the conference and we showed up a half entirely too late. We were not a good team the first half, we weren't playing Richmond hockey and Lock Haven got a ton of momentum. They were able to find that early goal. You can't at this time of year play only 35 minutes. You are not going to win a game on that.”
The loss was just the Spiders' second in the conference as it moved to 9-8 overall and 5-2 in the A-10, while Lock Haven improved to 11-5 on the season and 5-1 in the league.
It was at the 5:46 mark where the Bald Eagles hit the lone goal off a corner. Rachel Valentine and Taylor Kennedy set up Megan Wenrich at the top of the circle for the goal.
Play was about even throughout the first 35 minutes as both teams recorded five shots apiece. Both teams registered a shot on goal in the second period, while the Spiders took the 2-1 corner advantage on the day.
Richmond turned the heat up in the second half as it was pressuring for a goal to tie the score at one. The Spiders even pulled their goalkeeper Kelley Wentling with just over four minutes remaining to up their chances, but the Bald Eagle defense remained strong.
Senior Rebecca Barry led the Spiders with two shots, while Wentling ended the day with three saves.
The Spiders will continue its three-game homestand Saturday, Nov. 1 when it welcomes No. 6 Duke at 5 p.m.
