Carrigan answered again with her second go-ahead goal of the game in the 30th minute when junior Ashley Riefner (Mechanicsville, Virginia / Atlee HS) lobbed in a throw-in from the sideline that found the head of junior Shannon Colligan (Greenwich, Connecticut) right to Carrigan for the score from eight yards away. Carrigan now has scored 13 goals this season, tops on the team and second-most in the league this season.
The Spiders held that 2-1 lead into the half. The Spiders held an 11-9 shooting edge in the balanced contest.
The Flyers came out hot in the second half, scoring twice in the first six minutes to take a 3-2 lead. Libby Leedom got her first goal of the season in the 49th minute and Waters got her first goal of the game less than three minutes later.
The score held until freshman Lexi Prillaman (Magnolia, Delaware) took a pass from Carrigan to the right sideline and got out ahead of her defender to bend in a left-footed shot from the corner of the goalie box on the 18 to inside of the far post to tie the game. The goal was her fourth of the season and the latest game-tying goal of the season by Richmond (87:44).
Richmond had 20 shots to the Flyers' 18 at the end of regulation. Each team got only one shot in the first overtime and Dayton had both attempts in the second until the OK was awarded the game was ended when Waters went low right for the victory.
Dayton's Heather Betancourt got the win in goal. She is 2-0 on the season.
Richmond's Katie Brennan (Fairfield, Connecticut) made six saves, but took the loss to drop to 3-2-2.
Richmond will host its last pair of matches next weekend to finish out the regular season. Friday, the Spiders are hosting Massachusetts at 7 p.m., when the team will celebrate its seniors in a pregame ceremony. Sunday, Richmond hosts Rhode Island in the regular-season finale. Two wins will qualify the Spiders for the A-10 Tournament the following week. Other qualifying scenarios will depend on other league results.
NOTES: This was the fifth time this season Carrigan has scored two goals in a contest, one shy of the school record of six, set by Brooke Sands in 1997… Colligan's assist gives her a conference-leading 12 this season, one shy of tying the school record… This was Richmond's first loss (5-1-1) when a Spider scored twice in the contest.
