Soccer Vaults Three Teams After 2-0 Win Friday
11/01/2014 | Women's Soccer
Richmond scored quickly in each half and the defense posted its fourth shutout of the season as the Spiders dispatched Massachusetts 2-0 in an important Atlantic 10 Conference contest Friday night at Robins Stadium. The Spiders vaulted four teams, including the Minutewomen, in the A-10 standings to sit fifth in their attempt to gain entry into the A-10 Championships next weekend. UR is now 9-7-2 overall, 3-2-2 in league games with one left to play. UM is now 5-8-4 overall, in ninth at 3-3 in the league standings.
Richmond is 7-0-1 all-time against Massachusetts at home, and the Spiders have so far turned in a 5-2 mark at Robins Stadium this season.
Just into the 16th minute, redshirt freshman Meaghan Carrigan (Greenville, South Carolina) blasted a shot that was saved by UM keeper Danielle Kriscenski, but out to junior Ashley Riefner (Mechanicsville, Virginia / Atlee HS) and she sent it in near post for the 1-0 lead. The goal was her ninth of the season and Carrigan collected her fourth assist of the year.

The score held to the break, a half in which the Spiders posted 12 shots and allowed just four from the Minutewomen.
Exactly five minutes into the second half, senior Ashley Williams (Williamburg, Virginia / Warhill HS) took a shot that was saved, but deflected off a defender but out to Carrigan, who sent it home from 15 yards. That goal was the team-leading 14th of the season from Carrigan, giving Williams her fourth assist on senior night. Carrigan's goal-scoring total is the third-most in a single season in program history, one away from Becca Wann's 2011 season.
Richmond posted 26 shots to eight for UM in the contest.
Richmond freshman keeper Katie Brennan (Fairfield, Connecticut) registered her fourth clean sheet of the year, collecting six saves in the shutout. She is tied for 12th for saves in a single season in team history. Her record improves to 4-2-2.
Kriscenski's mark fell to 3-6-2 in the loss. She had 10 saves for UM.
The Spiders honored their outgoing seniors in a pregame ceremony.
Richmond has one regular-season contest remaining, at home Sunday against Rhode Island. The Rams are one of the teams the Spiders can catch in the standings as well, trying to be one of the eight teams advancing to the A-10 Championship quarterfinals, Thursday at Dayton.
NOTES: Carrigan was second in the league in goals scored and points entering the weekend… Her 14 goals and four assists give her 32 points on the season, three behind La Salle's Kelsey Haycook for the league lead… Riefner is second on the team in points, now with 26 as her nine goals are accompanied by eight assists… That total gets her into the top five in the league... A win solidifies Richmond as the four seed in the league standings... A tie or loss puts the Spiders into scoreboard watching on Sunday for seeding scenarios. Atlantic 10.com will have complete tournament seedings following Sunday's action.
