Spider Hockey Edged, 2-1, At La Salle Sunday
10/05/2014 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Richmond field hockey team was edged by the La Salle Explorers, 2-1, Sunday at DeVincent Field. The loss for the Spiders marks the first loss in conference play as they are 3-1 and 7-5 on the season.
“We knew the game was going to be a battle until the final whistle today as conference standing increases with intensity each weekend,” commented Richmond head coach Gina Lucido. “The team did everything within their means to compete at their best and LaSalle got the final edge over us.”
Despite a first-half goal that came late in the period, the Spiders found themselves tied with the Explorers in the 41st minute. And then La Salle hit the game-winner with under three minutes in regulation.
Freshman Kasey Gilbride keeps impressing as she hit the lone goal for the Spiders, which was her third goal in two contests. The Sag Harbor, N.Y., native capped off the weekend leading the Spiders with six points, on three goals and four shots which were all on goal.
The Spiders were just outshot by La Salle, 18-16, and took seven corners on the day. Junior Taylor Deitrick led the squad with four shots, three on goal and one assist, while senior Blair Kline followed with three shots and two on goal.
Goalkeeper Kelley Wentling played all 70 minutes in cage for Richmond and picked up seven saves on the day.
Richmond will take a break from conference play and return to Crenshaw Field Friday, Oct. 10 to host Virginia at 5:30 p.m.
