Barry Highlights A-10 Field Hockey All-Conference Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Senior Rebecca Barry of the Richmond field hockey team highlights the 2014 Atlantic 10 Conference honors for the Spiders as she was named Offensive Player of the Year, announced by the league office Thursday afternoon.
“I'm really pleased that so many Spiders were represented in the post-season awards,” commented Richmond head coach Gina Lucido. “These young women have demonstrated consistent performance and our program shares their accolades and joy. Rebecca will genuinely point to her team's ability to put her in scoring position, however, her insatiable desire to score sets her apart and earned this honor.”
Junior Amy Cooke and senior Samantha Ostoich join Barry on the A-10 All-Conference First Team, while junior Allison Haas and Kelley Wentling were placed on the A-10 All-Conference Second Team.
In addition to the All-Conference teams, freshmen Kasey Gilbride and Megan Miller were placed on the All-Rookie Team, and senior Helen Warner was placed on the All-Academic squad.
Barry marks the first time since 2009 Richmond earned an A-10 Offensive Player of the Year award.
The four-time A-10 All-Conference First Team honoree, Barry, has started each of the Spiders' 19 games this season and has recorded 13 goals and three assists for 29 total points. Four of Barry's 13 goals this season have proved to be game winners. The Limerick, Ireland, native posted an A-10 best 21 points in league play, registering 10 goals against A-10 opponents.
This is Cooke's second-straight season earning first team honors in the league. The Ballyclare, Northern Ireland native has started all 19 games for Richmond this season and is one of the league's top defenders. She has recorded three goals, four assists and 10 points this year.
Ostoich started all 15 games played in the midfield this season. The team captain earned her second-straight first team honor as she has recorded two goals, one assist and five points this year. Her defensive presence in the midfield has helped the Spiders to six shutouts this season.
Leading the nation with 11 defensive saves, Haas picked up her first postseason conference honor. Richmond's top defender has helped the Spiders to six shutouts this season and has recorded two assists as she started all 20 games.
Wentling has posted a 8-7 record this season between the pipes for the Spiders. The senior goalkeeper has picked up five shutouts that lead the A-10. Her .867 save percentage and 0.74 goals against average also leads the league.
Gilbride has played in 18 games this season and has recorded three goals and an assist which is good for seven points, while Miller has seen action in all 19 games and has two assists on the year.
Majoring in interdisciplinary physics, Warner has played in all 19 games this season as a defender and had helped Richmond to six shutouts while maintaining over a 3.0 overall GPA to earn her second-career academic honor.
Richmond, the proud host of the 2014 A-10 Championship, will kick off the tournament at 11 a.m. tomorrow, Nov. 7 in the first semifinal game against Saint Francis.
