Spider Hockey Shuts Out Red Flash In A-10 Semifinal
11/07/2014 | Field Hockey
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Five Spiders scored in the Richmond field hockey 5-0 win over the Saint Francis Red Flash in the semifinal game of the 2014 Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship Friday afternoon.
“The team came out and executed everything that we have been working on,” commented Richmond head coach Gina Lucido. “I am so proud of the program because all season long we have been winning close games. We always talk about reaping and sowing. If you plant good seeds, they are going to bare harvest if you don't give up and that is just something that our program stands on. You could see that today with five different scorers.”
With the win, the Spiders advance to the Championship game with an overall record of 11-9. The Red Flash ended the season with a 14-3 record overall.
Richmond didn't waste any time with its strong attack as it was awarded a penalty stroke seven minutes into the game. The Saint Francis goalkeeper Samantha Zeiders remained strong in goal and stopped junior Amy Cooke's hard shot at the 7:40 mark.
In the 23rd minute, Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year Rebecca Barry got the ball rolling for the Spiders as the senior slid a penalty stroke past Zeiders to make it a 1-0 ball game.
Five minutes before the half, freshman Megan Miller hit her first goal of the season off a routine corner. Cooke and junior Allison Haas picked up the assists for the freshman as the Spiders went into the break with the 2-0 lead.
Junior Kimberly Sportack was a fire in the circle during the 44th minute as she rebounded off her own shot for the third goal of the game and her second on the season.
After senior Blair Kline's first goal of the season at the 56:09 mark, sophomore Kelly Quinn capped off the offense for Richmond with a goal at the 66:27 mark that was assisted by Barry.
With the assist, Barry upped her career total for 140 points which surpassed Richmond's all-time leader Shannon Taylor (2004-06) on the career points list.
The Spiders dominated from start to finish as they outshot the Red Flash, 14-2, and took the 3-1 corner advantage. Sportack led both teams with three shots and two on goal, while Cooke and Barry both followed with two shots apiece.
“We have always known that our attack would break out,” added Lucido. “We have so many talented players on our team. I just couldn't be more proud of our team performance. You have to be a great team to win in the post season and we are exactly where we need to be.”
Richmond will play the winner of the second semifinal game (No. 1 UMass vs. No. 4 Lock Haven) that kicks off at 2 p.m. Friday in the Championship game that is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m.
