Spider Hockey Wins Its Eighth A-10 Title In Overtime
11/08/2014 | Field Hockey
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Senior A-10 Offensive Player of the Year Rebecca Barry hit the game-winner to lift the Richmond field hockey team over UMass, 1-0, in overtime that landed the Spiders its eighth Atlantic 10 Championship Saturday afternoon at Crenshaw Field.
With the win, the Spiders earn an automatic bid to the 2014 NCAA Tournament with an overall record of 12-9. Their opponent and game time will be announced Sunday, Nov. 8 during the NCAA Selection Show at 10 p.m.
Richmond attacked the entire day, outshooting top-seeded UMass (11-10), 10-4, and took the 7-4 corner advantage. The first extra period was even in shots before Barry bagged the game-winner, a solo cut-back shot that ricocheted off the Minutewomen goalkeeper Sam Carlino's stick into the net, at the 76:27 mark.
Barry led both teams with three shots that were all on goal, while junior Amy Cooke followed with three shots and two on goal.
2014 A-10 Most Outstanding Player, Kelley Wentling, played all 76 minutes in goal and stopped all three Minutewomen shots on goal to earn the accolade. Wentling improved her overall record to 10-7, while Carlino ended the season 11-10 overall.
This is the first A-10 Championship for the Spiders since the 2011 season and eighth overall. Richmond and UMass have combined to win the last 18 A-10 Titles, dating back to the 1996 season.
Richmond placed five Spiders on the 2014 All-Championship Team, including Barry, Wentling, Cooke, senior Samantha Ostoich and freshman Megan Miller.
