
Hot Start Lifts Women's Basketball Over The UNCW Seahawks

WILMINGTON, N.C. – A hot first half led the Richmond women's basketball team over the UNC Wilmington Seahawks, 77-67, Wednesday evening at Trask Coliseum. Five Spiders recorded double figures in the win.
Richmond came out hot in the first half as they went 7-of-8 in the first six minutes and led by as many as 20 points at the 9:02 mark to improve to 5-4 on the season. Janelle Hubbard knocked down 10 of the sophomores 16 points in the first 10 minutes of play as she made her second start of the season.
The Spiders shot 51.5 percent from the field in the first half to hold the 41-37 lead at the break. UNCW got back in the contest in the final three minutes of the first as it hit six-straight free throws and held the Spiders to just two points in that span.
Leading by as many as 13 with nine minutes to play, Richmond felt the UNCW pressure with three minutes remaining as the Seahawks cut the lead to five. Back-and-forth play went on for two minutes until the Spiders scored the last five points of the game to secure the 10-point victory.
In addition to Hubbard, junior Lauren Tolson also scored 16 points, while junior Bria Powell and sophomore Olivia Healy followed with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Senior Liz Brown led the floor with a season-high 12 rebounds.
The Spiders forced 15 UNC Wilmington (2-5) turnovers off 11 steals, which turned into 21 points for Richmond. The Seahawks shot 42.1 percent from the floor and knocked down 18-of-25 free throws throughout the contest. Senior Genevieve Okoro recorded a game-high four steals for the Spiders.
The Spiders will continue on the road when it travels to Richmond, Ky., to take on Eastern Kentucky Sunday, Dec. 21 at 2 p.m.
