Spider Baseball Falls To Fairfield, 6-2
03/01/2014 | Baseball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders dropped game two of Saturday's doubleheader to Fairfield, 6-2, at Pitt Field.
With the setback, Richmond falls to 1-8 on the season, while Fairfield improves to 1-3 on the year.
In game two of the doubleheader, pitching dominated early. After a scoreless first three innings, Fairfield scored twice in the fourth and once more in the sixth to take a 3-0 lead in to the bottom of the frame.
Richmond's offense came alive in the inning, scoring twice to cut the lead to 3-2. With two outs, back-to-back singles from Mike Small and Doug Kraeger put runners on the corners. A balk was then called on the Stags' pitcher, allowing Small to score from third and Kraeger to move to second base.
Sophomore Matt Dacey came through for the Spiders, lining a single to left-center field. Trying to score from second, Kraeger slid around the tag of the Fairfield catcher, scoring Richmond's second run.
One run is as close as Richmond was able to get, however, as Fairfield add runs in the eighth and the ninth to win game two, 6-2.
The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team will conclude its series with the Fairfield Stags tomorrow at Pitt Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
