Spider Baseball Splits Season Series with Maryland

Richmond, now 14-15 on the season and 3-6 in league play, stay on the road this week. UR will head to Philadelphia to take on La Salle in Atlantic 10 Conference action with a series starting on Thursday due the holiday weekend.
The Spiders got on the board in the first inning. Michael Elko drew a one-out walk then advanced to third on Dylan Winebrenner's base hit. Evan Wilson doubled in Elko to put the Spiders on the board first.
Richmond added two more runs in the second. Reid Downs led off the inning with a double and Aidan O'Keefe drew a walk, and both moved up on Noah Harvey's sacrifice bunt. Elko laced a base hit to right field to bring in Downs and O'Keefe.
RJ Johnson Jr. picked up the Spiders fourth run in the fourth inning with a RBI ground out to bring in O'Keefe from third.
The Maryland offense was patient at the plate. The Terps collected five runs on two hits, including a home run, two walks and an error in the first inning. UMD got a three-run home run in the second and a RBI double in the third. Maryland had a six run fourth, stringing together four hits and five walks. In the fifth, the Terps got two more runs in the fifth and sixth innings for a 19-4 victory.
Glenn Smith took the loss on a pitching staff day. Smith allowed five runs, two earned, on two hits and two walks in two-thirds of an inning while Aaron Van Tuyle finished the frame with a line out. Van Tuyle started the second, allowing two hits, a wild pitch and a walk before he was replaced by Angel Santiago-Cruz.
Santiago-Cruz went two innings, scattering two runs on four hits, two walks and striking out two. Chrisitan Dray allowed six runs on two hits, four walks, two wild pitches and a strikeout in two-thirds of an inning. Keane Hyer faced three batters allowing two hits before Paul Witkop got the out of the fourth with a fly out. In the fifth, Noah Haught allowed two runs on two hits and a walk. Bijan Anvar gave up two runs on two hits and a strikeout before Sam Young got the final out scattering a hit and a walk.
