Five Spiders Score Goals in 14-5 Road Loss at UMBC
03/01/2014 | Men's Lacrosse
Richmond traded goals with UMBC for the first 13 minutes of their men's lacrosse game Saturday, but the Retrievers scored five-straight goals and pulled away to a 14-5 win in Baltimore, Md. on Saturday afternoon at the UMBC Stadium. The win pushes UMBC to 2-1, with the Spiders slipping to 0-4 in their inaugural season.
Five different Spiders had goals, including freshman Mitch Goldberg (Damascus, Md.), who is the only player to score a goal in all four games this season for Richmond.
The Retrievers scored the first goal with 6:42 remaining in the first period, with a tying goal coming from sophomore midfielder Cory Palmer (Atlanta, Ga.), his first of the season, at 4:07 in the first.
At that point, UMBC scored a goal at the 1:19 mark and the first four goals of the second to open up a 6-1 lead. Richmond's Brendan Hynes (Mahopac, N.Y.) was finally able to answer with a goal at the 2:20 mark in the second. Following another UMBC goal, Richmond scored with two seconds remaining in the half on a goal from defenseman Madison Day (Midlothian, Va. / Midlothian HS) for a 7-3 score. It was Day's first goal of his career and the assist went to midfielder Alex Hatem (Syracuse, N.Y.), who has at least one point (a goal or assist) in all four Richmond games this season.
“Definitely have to give credit to the UMBC coaches and players,” said Richmond head coach Dan Chemotti.
“They were unselfish, organized and quicker to the ground balls. Our sloppiness in the clearing game and our decision making as a whole contributed to more goals against that we would have liked.”
UMBC scored the first three goals of the third until Goldberg found the back of the net t the 3:48 mark and the Retrievers scored four more times before freshman midfielder Jean-Luc Chetner (Pentiction, British Columbia) scored the final goal of the game, at the 4:28 mark in the fourth quarter for a 14-5 final score. Sophomore attack Brad Burnam (Nedrow, N.Y.) had the assist, making him the only player with an assist in all four games this season.
“This week coming up is a player's week with three games in eight days, which is good and bad,” added Chemotti. “The good is that we don't have to let this one sit too long. The bad is, we have to fix some things before a good Holy Cross team comes to campus on Tuesday.”
As they have done all season, Richmond was stout defensively when a man down, allowing only one goal in five Retrievers opportunities. Opponents have only score five man-up goals in 14 opportunities this season.
UMBC won twice as many faceoffs as the Spiders (14-7), but Richmond secured more clears in the game (19-14).
Freshman goalie Conor Shannon (Ridgefield, Conn.) took the first loss of the season in the contest. He collected eight saves, one off his career high.
The Spiders will return home Tuesday afternoon, with a 4 p.m. faceoff scheduled against Holy Cross at Robins Stadium. Admission is free.
