Spiders Edged By VCU, 56-50

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Junior Kendall Anthony scored a game-high 20 points and led for most of the game, but VCU came back to take a 56-50 victory Thursday night in a sold-out Robins Center.
The Spiders led for the game's first 30 minutes, including an 11-point lead early in the second-half. VCU came back to tie the game with 9;59 to play and took their first lead at 42-40 with 8:57 remaiing.
The Rams (23-7, 11-4 Atlantic 10) would lead by no more than five until two Rob Brandenberg free throws with two seconds remaining made the final margin six.
Anthony made three three-pointers as he moved into fifth on the school's career list for treys with 206. The Jackson, Tenn. native averaged 25.5 points per game against the Rams this season, including his career-high 31 at the Siegel Center on Feb. 1.
It was Anthony's 15th career 20-point game, including his sixth in the last nine games.
Sophomore Alonzo Nelson-Ododa scored nine points and sophomore Terry Allen had eight points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Trey Davis grabbed 12 rebounds, for his seventh double-figure rebounding game of the season.
The Spiders shot just 31.6 percent from the field, but held VCU to 38.5 percent shooing and a season-low 56 points.
Richmond (18-12, 8-7 Atlantic 10) hits the road to finish the regular season at Dayton on Saturday at 7 p.m.
