Errors Doom Spiders In Loss To South Florida

KINGSTON, R.I. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team fell on the road at Rhode Island, 6-5, on Thursday afternoon.

With the loss, Richmond falls to 22-26-1 on the season overall and to 11-12 in Atlantic 10 conference play. With the win, Rhode Island improves to 13-38 on the year and to 7-16 in league action.

Sophomore Tyler Beckwith went 2-for-4 on the day with a triple and two RBI, while junior Ryan Cook had a two-run double. Freshman Kurtis Brown also drove in a run for the Spiders in the loss.

Trailing 3-0 entering the top of the fourth inning, the Spiders tied the game at 3-3 with three runs in the frame. With the bases loaded and one out, Brown swung at the first pitch, chopping a grounder to first base that scored the run from third base on the RBI groundout.

Cook followed and on the second pitch of the at-bat, the junior lined a double down the left-field line, scoring a pair of runs to tied the game at 3-3.

Rhode Island responded with two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth inning to retake a 6-3 lead headed to the top of the eighth.

In the eighth, the Spiders cut the Rams advantage to just one, 6-5. With runners on second and third base after a pair of walks, Beckwith found a gap, lining a two-run triple to right-center field to cut the Rhode Island lead to just one.

In the top of the ninth, Richmond was unable rally and fell on the road at Rhode Island, 6-5.

The Richmond Spiders will continue their series with Rhode Island on Friday, with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.
