KINGSTON, R.I. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team clinched its' fourth-straight bid to the Atlantic 10 Tournament with a 12-4 win at Rhode Island on Friday afternoon.
With the victory, Richmond ends the regular season with a record of 24-26-1 and a mark of 13-12 in the Atlantic 10. With the loss, Rhode Island ends the year with a record of 13-40 and 7-18 in league action.
“I couldn't be happier with the way we battled as a team today,” Richmond head coach Tracy Woodson said following the game. “To come from behind in not one, but both games gives us some good momentum heading in to the tournament.”
Sophomore Tyler Beckwith went 2-for-4 with home run, a double and four RBI, while Matt Dacey hit a grand slam to lead the Spiders. Sophomore Jansen Fraser also had a day, going 3-for-6 with two doubles, a triple, a RBI and two runs scored.
Senior Cory Moheit batted 3-for-4 with a solo homer, two runs scored and a RBI, while sophomore Doug Kraeger had a pair of doubles, a RBI and two runs scored.
On the mound, senior RHP Andrew Blum gave Richmond a solid start, going 4.2 innings, allowing just two runs. Out of the bullpen, RHP Ray Harron (4-2) pitched the final 3.1 innings to earn the win, allowing just two hits.
Scoreless for the first five innings, Richmond got on the board in the top of the sixth, cutting the Rhode Island lead to 2-1. After a Fraser double, Kraeger switch places with him, lacing a RBI double down the left-field line.
Rhode Island responded, however, scoring two runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-1 lead.
The seventh inning would start the offensive onslaught for the Spiders, as Richmond scored the game's final 10 runs. In the seventh, Moheit crushed a solo home run over the fence in left field to cut the Rhody lead to 4-2.
In the eighth, the Spiders took the lead for good, scoring three runs thanks to a Beckwith three-run double down the left-field line.
Leading 5-4 in the ninth, Richmond exploded for seven runs on seven hits. The inning was highlighted by back-to-back homers from Dacey and Beckwith. With the bases loaded, Dacey hit a 3-2 offering over the fence in right field. Beckwith followed, blasting a solo home run deep over the left-field fence.
Later in the frame, Fraser hits his second double of the inning, scoring one to give Richmond its' winning margin of 12-4.
With the victory, Richmond has earned the final bid to the 2014 Atlantic 10 Tournament. The Spiders are the only team in the league to make the tournament the last four years. The first round of the tournament gets underway on Wednesday in St. Louis.
