Field Hockey Opens With 4-1 Win Over No. 19 American

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Richmond field hockey squad opened its 2014 season with a 4-1 victory over No. 19-ranked American Friday afternoon at the William I. Jacobs Recreational Complex.
“I'm so proud of this team. We set out to be passionate and disciplined today," said Richmond head coach Gina Lucido.
"American is a very strong team and tested us fiercely. We were able to withstand the pressure and capitalized on our momentum in the 2nd half."
Kelley Wentling recorded her first start in goal since 2012 as she only allowed one goal and picked up five saves as she played the entire contest in goal for her fourth career win.
“Kelley Wentling proved she is ready to make a statement in cage and continue the stingy defensive legacy at Richmond. The team effort was praiseworthy as four different Spiders put the ball in the back of the net,” added Lucido.
After an early 1-0 American (0-1) lead that came 16 minutes into the contest, the Spiders got the momentum going with a tying goal from Rebecca Barry at the 22:02 mark. Avery Safford, Allison Siegel and Kelly Quinn all followed with second-half goals to secure the first win of the season for the Spiders (1-0).
Safford tagged her first goal of the season when she connected on a save from AU's goalie, Kate McBeath, while Kimberly Sportack and Megan Miller were charted for the assist.
At the 50:58 mark, Siegel tallied the third goal of the contest on her second goal of her career from a perfect pass from Quinn, which gave the sophomore a team-high three points.
Quinn wrapped up the victory when she rebounded a penalty corner shot from Amy Cooke with six minutes left.
“We face a talented William and Mary team on Sunday, and I am confident we will stay humble and hungry,” closed Lucido.
The Spiders will be back in action when they return home to host William & Mary at 1 p.m. at Crenshaw Field.
