Barry Notches Game-Winner At City-Rival VCU In OT
09/19/2014 | Field Hockey
RICHMOND, Va. – Senior Rebecca Barry notched the game-winner to lift the Richmond field hockey team over city-rival VCU, 1-0, in a thrilling overtime game that started Atlantic 10 play for both teams Friday evening at Cary Street Field.
“To begin our A-10 season with an overtime win was cause for celebration,” commented Richmond head coach Gina Lucido. “The spiders showed great maturity and poise throughout the game and we were a solid team for the entire duration of play.”
Richmond improved to 4-3 on the season as it picked up its first A-10 win, while VCU fell to 1-5 on the year and 0-1 in conference play.
It wasn't until the 72:11 mark when Barry hit the game-winning goal. Freshman Megan Miller set up the Limerick, Ireland native for a shot that went past VCU goalkeeper Kendall Clifton. It was the only shot on goal for both squads.
“Our captain Rebecca Barry seized her moment in OT and put the game away on cross from freshmen Meg Miller,” added Lucido. “Captain Sam Ostoich was outstanding in our midfield, setting up attacking play and keeping the Rams disjointed in counter play. I am really pleased at the growth and increasing focus in team chemistry.”
Barry led the way with a game-high five shots, while freshman Katrina Balatgek followed with two. Richmond outshot the Rams, 9-2, and held the 6-2 corner advantage.
Junior Caroline McCabe picked up her first-career win and shutout as she played all 73 minutes in goal for the Spiders.
This marked the third overtime game in four contests for the Spiders this season.
Richmond will return home Sunday, Sept. 21, its first time in five games, when it hosts No. 12 Wake Forest at 1 p.m. on Crenshaw Field.
