UR Honors Seniors In Final Home Meet
01/24/2015 | Women's Swimming & Diving
Richmond swimming and diving got points from 17 different student-athletes, including all of the senior swimmers, but James Madison took the 176-123 win Saturday at the Robins Center Natatorium.
Freshman Annie Lane (Vinton, Virginia / William Byrd HS) and sophomore Maggie Pope (Nashville, Tennessee) helped pace the Spiders by scoring 26 points each (relays included), while senior Anna Fetter (Westfield, New Jersey) contributed to 25 points for the team. Junior Natalya Ares (Potomac, Maryland) added 19 points to the cause. All four swam in the 400 Medley relay, which took the top spot to earn 11 points towards the team score in the meet.
“We didn't like losing last week and we really focused our efforts this week,” said Spiders head coach Matt Barany. “Even though we lost on the scoreboard to a fast team, we feel like we have taken steps to get better. We have a quick turnaround and to get ready for Villanova this week on Friday.”
In the two diving events, freshman Laura Rokop (Carmel, Indiana) posted a career-best score of 267.59 in the 1m springboard, the first NCAA Zone-qualifying score of her career, to take second place in the event. Sophomore Irina Chiulli (Westwood, Massachusetts) won the 3m event, scoring a 283.13 for nine points towards the team total.
“Our divers performed well today against a talented group of JMU divers,” said UR head diving coach Sean Letsinger. “We continue to grow with every meet, and are excited with where we are going into the final few weeks remaining in our season.”
The team held pre-meet ceremonies for their five seniors, competing for the final time on campus. Fetter and swimmers AnneMarie Bilott (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), Meredith Gouger (Cockeysville, Maryland) and Allison Titley (Richmond, Virginia / Saint Gertrude HS) all scored points in the meet, while diver Katherine Cook (Kenilworth, Illinois), came back from injury last week in time to dive again in competition from familiar surroundings.
Richmond will head to Philadelphia to take on Villanova in the team's last dual meet of the season Friday, starting at noon.
