Field Hockey Takes Swing Through North Carolina

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Richmond field hockey (7-6, 4-0) travels to North Carolina this weekend for games at Davidson on Friday, Oct. 16 at 5:30 p.m., and at Appalachian State on Sunday, Oct. 18 at noon.
Friday's matchup with the Wildcats (7-7, 4-1) will be a battle for first place in the conference. While Sunday's game is a brief step out of conference play against the independent Mountaineers (4-8). Richmond is 10-3-1 against Davidson all-time and 12-0 against Appalachian State.
The Spiders went a perfect 2-0 last weekend at home with wins over La Salle and Saint Joseph's to stay unbeaten in conference play. UR shutout both opponents to tally UR's third shutout in four conference games.
Kelly Quinn has set the tone for the Richmond offense, registering 12 points on six goals, taking just eight shots. Avery Safford is second for the Spiders with nine points (two goals and five assists), while Amy Cooke has registered two goals and two assists for six points.
Goaltenders Emily Braunewell and Amanda Hoyt have split time in between the pipes for the Spiders. Braunewell has registered 39 saves in seven games to own a .736 save percentage and a 2.20 goals against average. Hoyt has turned away 25 shots in eight games to register a .581 save percentage and a 2.56 goals against average.
Richmond ranks No. 19 in the NCAA RPI with a strong schedule so far. The Spiders have played six teams ranked in the top 20.
Davidson has scored 10 first-half goals this season and is 7-0 when scoring the first goal of the game. Wildcat keeper Emily Leytham has posted 67 saves in 14 games, turning away 79 percent of shots to rank seventh in the country.
Winners of four of their last seven contests, Davidson is scoring an average of 1.43 goals per game over that stretch, while limiting their opponents to just 0.71 goals per game. The senior class has been superb for the Wildcats, accumulating 16 goals and seven assists for 35 points between the trio of Anna Davis, Melissa Funsten and Lucy Pidcock.
In Appalachian State's last game, they shut out Davidson. Senior Caroline Phillips has handled the bulk of the scoring with seven of the team's 23 goals to her credit and leads the Apps in points (16), shots (39), shots on goal (24), and game-winners (2). Micaela Diedericks has scored a goal in three of the last four games to move into second place on the squad in that category with five.
