Richmond Runs Past St. Francis In Big Conference Win
10/23/2015 | Field Hockey
The win helped the Spiders (9-7, 5-1) remain in second place in the tight conference race with just two league games remaining. The Red Flash (8-6, 4-3) entered the game in third place in the standings and now must battle for a spot in the conference tourney.
“It was really important to get the win today. The conference parity this year is so strong,” head coach Gina Lucido said. “At this point, we know as a program that anybody could be in those top four. Today was huge to beat the number three seed at this point and see some really good play. It was awesome to see Thalia Williamson come out strong and get two unassisted goals. I was proud of how we got on the boards quickly. We started focused and strong.”
UR leapt to an early lead as Williamson dribbled into the circle and fired off on an unassisted shot for her first goal of the season just a minute into the game.
Richmond controlled possession over the next 20 minutes and then turned away three Red Flash shots in the final few minutes of the first half.
Williamson opened the second half in similar fashion with a dribble into the circle and an unassisted shot fired to the back right corner to put UR up 2-0.
Emma Johansson added her second goal of the year on an assist from Laetitia Commeyne at the 50-minute mark. Hannah Thomson scored UR's final goal on an assist from team assist leader Avery Safford.
St. Francis got one goal in the final five minutes on a deflection from Brea Seabrook off a shot from Irene Fritschy on a penalty corner.
Richmond will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday at noon against No. 14 Boston College. The Spiders will honor Kimberly Sportack, Taylor Deitrick, Amy Cooke, Allison Haas and Avery Safford before the game begins.
