UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – No. 14 Boston College (10-7) stung Richmond (9-8) on the Spiders' Senior Day game with a 2-0 decision from Crenshaw Field.
Richmond played its seventh nationally-ranked opponent of the season in a schedule that ranks nationally for difficulty. With the game coming out of conference, Richmond remains in first place in Atlantic 10 play after Davidson lost yesterday.
Boston College scored both of its goals off penalty corners. The first came 18 minutes into the first half off a shot from Brittany Sheenan. Emily McCoy assisted on the play.
The Eagles scored another goal just five minutes into the second half on a penalty corner. Eryn McCoy gathered the ball after UR goalkeeper Amanda Hoyt made a diving save, and McCoy was able to tap the deflection past her for the goal.
Hoyt finished with three saves in 56:33 of action as UR went without a goalie for the final 13 minutes of play.
BC outshot Richmond 10-7 as Amy Cooke had Richmond's only shot on goal.
Before and after the game, Richmond honored five seniors in Amy Cooke, Allison Haas, Avery Safford, Kimberly Sportack and Taylor Deitrick. The quintet has had a decorated tenure with the Spiders including an A-10 tournament championship and NCAA appearance in 2014.
The 2015 class has left a legacy of professionalism and perseverance,” head coach Gina Lucido said. “The magnitude of tactical change and personal accountability required by this leadership group would only find success through deep character. Five women have walked out faithful and teachable spirits in their toughest challenges. The fruit of their labor will outlast the lessons of physical training, and bless their lives significantly.”
The Spiders will play a makeup game against VCU at home on Oct. 28 at 5 p.m. as the last home game of the season.
