UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond battled through rainy conditions and came out with a 3-1 conference win over rival VCU.
The victory kept Richmond (10-8, 6-1) in first place and in the driver's seat for the A-10 regular season crown with just one conference game remaining.
“We did what we needed to remain in first place tonight,” head coach Gina Lucido said. “VCU did a really good job of competing through the whole game. That was something I think we could of done better. I was proud of the way that we converted goals off penalty corners. This team is definitely still hungry and we have to continue to improve as we close out the regular season.”
Two of Richmond's three goals came off penalty corners.
In the first half, Kasey Gilbride fired one home off a corner from Kelly Quinn and set from Allison Haas. The Spiders accomplished the feat again just a minute into the second half when senior Amy Cooke hit one in from straight on after a penalty corner.
VCU was able to get on the scoreboard a few minutes later when Jamee Albright deflected in a shot from Emily McNamara, pulling the margin to 2-1.
Richmond's Katrina Balatgek pushed forward an attack later in the half, taking a pass from Taylor Deitrick and firing home a long shot from the left side for the final 3-1 margin.
The Spiders led the Rams in shots, 21-4, while the Rams made 11 saves. Richmond was able to take nine penalty corners to VCU's two.
UR will conclude the regular season on Friday at Saint Louis with a chance to win the Atlantic 10 regular season title.
