ST LOUIS – The Richmond Spiders field hockey team went on the road and closed out the regular season with a 3-0 win over Saint Louis on Friday afternoon.
With the victory, the Spiders (11-8, 7-1) clinched the top seed in next week's Atlantic 10 Tournament in Philadelphia. It marks Richmond's ninth regular season championship in field hockey since joining the Atlantic 10.
“The team remained professional and focused with each A-10 opponent and earned the regular season title in solid fashion today,” head coach Gina Lucido said. “The conference tournament will be one of the toughest in years, but we are eager to show our competitive greatness within and finish this race on top.”
The Spiders scored two goals midway through the first half to put the game away. Emily Bowe scored off an assist from Avery Safford that was sent in from the right side at the 17-minute mark.
Kimberly Sportack then gave UR a 2-0 lead on a goal from Megan Miller just three minutes later. Taylor Deitrick put the game out of reach just six minutes into the second half with a goal from Kelly Quinn.
The Spiders outshot the Billikens 24-4, forcing SLU goalkeeper Tori Westhead to make 13 saves. Richmond's Amanda Hoyt made one save as she earned the shutout.
11 different Spiders got off shots with Katrina Balatgek leading the team with four shots on goal. The Spiders had eight penalty corners to SLU's one.
Richmond will wait for the rest of the league's teams to finish their weekend slates before the tournament field is announced. The A-10 semifinals will be played on Friday, Nov. 6 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
