Blue Takes Game One Of Spider Red-Blue Fall Series
10/31/2015 | Baseball
The Red squad attempted a furious comeback in the sixth inning, but the Blue team had enough offense and pitching to win 9-7 and take game one of the Richmond Baseball Red-Blue Fall World Series Saturday morning at Pitt Field.
First baseman Kurtis Brown (Champaign, Illinois) was 3-for-4 on the day for the Blue squad, including a triple and a run in the fourth and a two-run home run after the first two batters doubled in the fifth. His blast gave Blue an 8-1 lead. He produced a game-high three RBI in the contest.
Blue's Tyler Beckwith (Mt. Airy, Maryland) broke the game open with a three-run homer in the fourth, after a pair of two-out walks in that frame.
Red's comeback came in the sixth inning, when they produced six big runs to pull the game to within one run. Designated hitter David Cahn (New Orleans, Louisiana) cleared the bases with a three-RBI double with two outs, and a double two batters later by senior Michael Morman (Rockford, Illinois) drove in Cahn for the seventh run for the team.
Cahn and senior Jonathan de Marte (Yorktown Heights, New York) had two hits each to lead the Red squad.
Blue starter Brendan McGuigan (Austin, Texas) tossed 3.1 strong innings, allowing one hit, for the victory. He left with a 1-0 lead and the Blue team stayed ahead the rest of the way.
Freshman Jacob Lamb (Salisbury, Connecticut) allowed just one run in his start of three innings. He took the loss, despite retiring the last seven batters he faced before coming out for pitch count.
Game two has been moved back to Friday, with an 2:30 p.m. first pitch time.
