UR Swimming Completes Patriot Invitational
11/22/2015 | Women's Swimming & Diving
Richmond Swimming and Diving completed the three-day Patriot Invitational Saturday evening at George Mason University. Saturday's final evening featured an individual swimming win for a Spider in an event and multiple events with two Spiders in the finals.
UR got its swimming win in the final individual event of the night when senior Melissa Ross (Warrington, Pennsylvania) took first in the 200 Fly, with a 2:02.62, her fastest of the season in that event. Freshman Hannah Matheson (Skillman, New Jersey) finished fourth in the event, coming in at 2:06.81.
Sophomore Annie Lane (Vinton, Virginia / William Byrd HS) took third in the first event of the day, the 1,650 Free, posting a time of 17:22.99 in the near-mile freestyle swim. Freshman Lauren Wallace (Charlotte, North Carolina) came in sixth, at 17:33.54 in the grueling event.
“Attitude defeats fatigue this weekend,” said UR head coach Matt Barany. “This has been one of the fun weekends of swimming and diving. The divers had two great boards on Thursday and Friday and the swimmers made the most of Saturday with Melissa's fly win on the last individual event.”
In the event before Ross' 200 Fly win, sophomore Erin Barry (Millington, New Jersey) finished second in the 200 Breast, touching at 2:19.44, shaving nearly a full second off her preliminary time from earlier in the day.
The Spiders came in fifth in the 400 Free Relay to end the night and the competition.
“Mason beat us at this meet, and other schools swam a lot faster than we did this weekend,” added Barany. I'm guessing we won't be favored to win the A-10 after this weekend. We'll see if this motivates our group.”
The Spiders will travel up the road to George Washington on Saturday, December 5, for an 11 a.m. meet for the last competition of the semester.
