UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond women's tennis coach Mark Wesselink has announced the signing of Lea Owens to a national letter of intent to play for the Spiders next season. Owens, from Olney, Md. will be eligible to join the squad on the fall of 2016.
“Lea brings some impressive credentials and wins,” Wesselink said of Owens. “But more importantly she brings a work ethic and drive to succeed that all the coaches are looking for. Everyone out there recruiting is trying to guess which players are on the ascent. It is often very hard to tell but not in Lea's case. I watched her play Mid-Atlantic and National tournaments with the same focused intensity and will to win in every match. Her best tennis is ahead of her. We can't wait to see her in some Spiders gear!”
Owens currently ranks in the top 100 nationally at No. 93 the Tennis Recruiting Network. So far this year, she has collected seven wins over top 60 opponents and holds a 60-28 overall record during her high school career including a 26-11 mark opposite other four-star recruits such as herself.
Lea will join an already successful group of young ladies that currently populate the Richmond roster, many of which had successful falls. The 2016 spring season for the Spiders will get underway on Sunday, Jan. 24 at the Country Club of Virginia vs. Longwood at 4 p.m. The Spiders will play a total of 12 matches in Richmond this spring, 11 of which will be at home.
