WILMINGTON, N.C. – Five errors doomed the Richmond Spiders in an Opening Day, 7-2 loss at UNCW in the Buffalo Wild Wings Battle at the Beach on Friday afternoon.

“Today we had some first-game jitters and it showed,” head coach Tracy Woodson said following the game. “You can't commit five errors and strike out 15 times. That being said, I thought everything else was good for Opening Day and we are looking forward to tomorrow.”

INF Tyler Beckwith had two hits, including a two-run single and a double to pace the Richmond offense on Friday. INF Doug Kraeger had a hit and scored a run, while INF Keenan Bartlett clubbed a double for his first collegiate hit. INF Matt Dacey singled, while OF Michael Morman scored a run for the Spiders.

RHP Ryan Cook (0-1) took the loss, allowing five runs with only two earned in 4.2 innings pitched. Cook struck out five batters and allowed four hits on the afternoon. Out of the bullpen, RHP Dan Martinson pitched well, surrendering just one hit in two innings of work, striking out three.

Trailing 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning, Morman started a Spider rally, reaching on an error after the UNCW third baseman was unable to handle a line-drive grounder hit at him. Kraeger followed with a single to right field and after a wild pitch, both runners were in scoring position with no outs.

Next up was Dacey, who reached on an infield single to the Seahawk shortstop. Beckwith followed, singling up the middle on the first pitch he saw to tie the game at 2-2.

Errors again plagued the Spiders in the bottom of the fifth, however, as UNCW scored four runs in the frame to seize control of the game. The Seahawks added a run in the sixth for their winning margin of 7-2.

Due to expected cold temperatures in the Wilmington area on Sunday, the Spiders game against Ball State has been canceled.

The Richmond Spiders baseball team will conclude play at the Buffalo Wild Wings Battle at the Beach on Saturday, when the team faces Kentucky at 12 p.m.
