Women's Lacrosse Falls In Opener At No. 8 Duke
02/14/2015 | Women's Lacrosse
DURHAM, N.C. -- A trio of Richmond seniors scored goals, but the eighth-ranked Blue Devils od Duke presented too much offense to overcome in a 17-4 decision at Koskinen Stadium in Durham Friday to open the 2015 women's lacrosse season. Duke, which defeated Elon last weekend, starts 2-0 on the season.
Emily Doyle (Ho-Ho-Kus, New jersey) led the Spiders with two goals and an assist, while UR got goals from Anna Jeszeck (Cortlandt Manor, New York) and Bailey Zerr (Denver, Colorado) in the game.
The assist gave Doyle 73 for her career, just one away from a tie for fourth for a career at Richmond, currently held by Polly Purcell.
Duke scored the first three goals before Jeszeck got the Spiders on the board about six minutes into the game.
“We had a slow start to the game and weren't able to recover,” said UR head coach Allison Kwolek.
“Though the outcome wasn't what we wanted, we were able to execute parts of our game well. Now we need to reset, refine some things and focus on Virginia.”
Senior goalie Emily Boyce (Middletown, Massachusetts) put up 10 saves in the game, but faced 23 shots on goal in the afternoon. Junior Michaela Aymong (Northport, New York) played 12 minutes in goal for Richmond and recorded a pair of saves.
The Spiders will host their first game of the season Wednesday night, with a 5 p.m. start against current No. 7 Virginia at Robins Stadium.
