Spiders Fall In Home Opener To No. 7 Virginia 14-6
02/19/2015 | Women's Lacrosse
Richmond women's lacrosse played a tight game with No. 7 Virginia for nearly 30 minutes, but a flurry of late goals pushed the ranked Cavaliers past the host Spiders in a 14-6 result at Robins Stadium Wednesday afternoon. The Cavaliers improve to 1-1, while the Spiders start 0-2, both losses to teams ranked in the Top 10 in the country.
The host Spiders braved the chilly temperatures for its home opener after six inches of snow fell the day before on campus. UR and UVa. played to a riveting 3-2 score to the final minute of the opening half until the Cavaliers managed two goals in the last 20 seconds to pull out to a 5-2 halftime edge.
Richmond junior Charlett Stevenson (Darien, Connecticut) score the first goal of the game just past three minutes in, one of her two goals in the game, before Virginia managed three goals in the next five minutes.
The game stayed scoreless for the next 10 minutes before UR senior Bailey Zerr (Denver, Colorado) scored her second of the season to pull the game to within one. She was assisted by senior Emily Doyle (Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey), which gave her 74 for her career. That total put her in a tie for fourth place in the Richmond career record book.
After the half, the two teams alternated goals over the first 10 minutes, with both squad scoring three goals each in the span. That was before the Cavaliers rattled off six-straight goals to take command of the game before Stevenson's and Richmond's last goal of the contest.
The game was held close thanks to brilliant play in front of the cage by senior goalie Emily Boyce (Middletown, Maryland), who came up with 12 saves in the game, many at point-blank range.
The six goals included the first career goal from freshman Kim Egizi (Westwood, Massachusetts), whose goal got Richmond back to within two with a little less than 25 minutes in regulation.
The Spiders will stay at home to play an 11 a.m. game on Saturday morning, hosting American for a non-conference tilt at Robins Stadium. Admission is free of charge to Richmond lacrosse this season.
