Women's Lacrosse Notches First Win Saturday
02/21/2015 | Women's Lacrosse
Richmond junior midfielder Brooke Wilson (Ijamsville, Maryland) scored two goals and the Spiders held off a late charge from American to claim their first victory of the season 5-4 Saturday morning at Robins Stadium in a non-conference women's lacrosse contest.
The Spiders and Eagles are both 1-2 following the contest.
Wilson's first goal tied the game at one with a little over 22 minutes remaining in the first half. The assist came from senior Emily Doyle (Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey), giving her 75 career assists, which moved her into fourth place alone in program history.
AU's Madison Hoon scored her second goal of the game to give the Eagles the lead at the 20-minute mark in the opening period.
That score held until Doyle tied the game with 8:22 remaining in the period. It was the first of four-straight goals for Richmond in a stretch of 38:55 all the way to the latter stages of the contest.
Wilson scored her second goal of the game for the first scoring play of the second half, which occurred at the 20:34 mark. She was assisted by freshman Kim Egizi (Westwood, Massachusetts) for her first career assist.
Senior Bailey Zerr (Denver, Colorado) scored a goal less than a minute later for Richmond's final goal. The assist came from fellow senior Anna Jeszeck (Cortlandt Manor, New York).
Hoon added her third goal of the game to break the drought, and teammate Sarah Bootman scored with 3:10 remaining, but a final AU shot was saved by senior goalie Emily Boyce (Middletown, Maryland) with 24 seconds remaining to allow the Spiders to get the win.
Boyce came up with four saves for her first win of the season (1-2). Eagles goalie Rose Redfoot made 10 saves and collected a pair of ground balls in the loss (1-2).
The Spiders outshot the Eagles 28-12 and won seven of the 11 draws in the game.
Richmond held AU to four goals in the win last year in Washington, D.C. It was the first of four opponents Richmond held to four goals last season.
Richmond will play a pair of in-state opponents on the road next week, starting with a Wednesday afternoon game at Longwood, starting at 4 p.m.
