ALLENDALE, S.C. – The University of Richmond Spiders used 18 hits and solid pitching to defeat the Holy Cross Crusaders, 14-7, at the USC-Salkehatchie Athletic Complex in Allendale, S.C. on Friday night.
With the victory, Richmond improves to 1-2 on the season, while Holy Cross falls to 0-4 on the year. The game was moved to Allendale, S.C. due to weather in the Richmond area.
“I really liked the way we swung the bats,” Richmond head coach Tracy Woodson said. “Ryan Cook gave us a solid start and after Holy Cross cut the lead to 4-3, we didn't stop scoring runs. We always tell the team, 'Don't stop scoring runs' and we did that today.”
1B Doug Kraeger had a terrific day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two doubles and a pair of RBI. OF Michael Morman had a three-run homer, while SS Tyler Beckwith had three hits, including a solo home run.
On the mound, RHP Ryan Cook (1-1) tossed 5.1 innings to earn the victory. The senior allowed just three runs on five hits, while striking out three. RHP James Lively pitched the final 3.1 innings to earn the save.
After scoring the first four runs of the game, the Crusaders fought back, plating three runs in the top of the sixth to cut the Spider lead to just one, 4-3.
Richmond answered back in a big way, however, scoring 10 runs over the next two innings to secure the victory.
Seven players had two or more hits on the afternoon for the Spiders. 3B Matt Dacey went 2-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and a RBI, while OF Jansen Fraser also had a pair of hits with a double and a RBI.
Freshman 2B Keenan Bartlett continued his strong play, going 3-for-5 with a run scored, while DH Kurtis Brown had two hits and two RBI.
The Richmond Spiders will conclude their three-game series with the Holy Cross Crusaders on Saturday when the teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. on the campus of USC-Salkehatchie.
