02/28/2015 | Women's Lacrosse
LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Junior Emily Newman (New Albany, Ohio) set a career high and junior Charlett Stevenson (Darien, Connecticut) tied her career high as both scored four goals each in the Richmond's 13-10 first-ever trip to Liberty Saturday in non-conference women's lacrosse action. The 13 goals are a new season high for the Spiders, who had scored 19 goals combined in its first four games.
Newman came into the game without a goal this season, while Stevenson vaulted to the team lead in goal-scoring with seven total following the contest.
Richmond gets its second win of the year (2-3), while the Flames drop to 1-4. It was Richmond's first road win of the season.
"It was great to see the offense come out and play with such confidence today," said Richmond head coach Allison Kwolek.
"They were really attacking the goal. Even with Liberty's goalie having an outstanding game, we were able to find the back of the net. I'm encouraged with the team's play as we return home with two tough games this week."
Liberty scored the first two goals of the game before Stevenson got her first goal at the 18:03 mark in the opening half. The teams traded goals before the Spiders finished the half by scoring five straight goals to take a 7-4 halftime margin.
Both teams scored six times in the second half. Though the Flames closed the game to one goal, at 10-9, the Spiders scored three of the last four goals to pull away in the finals 13:18 of the second half. Newman and Stevenson scored the last goals of the game, coming 44 seconds apart with less than seven minutes remaining.
Four different Spiders had an assist each, including the team-leading fifth from senior Emily Doyle (Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey). The assist broke her out of a three-way tie and into second place alone in Richmond career history with 77 helpers.
The Spiders scored more than half of their goals, seven, on free position shots. Newman scored twice and Stevenson put in three on free position shots in the contest. It was the most free position goals for the team since March 30, 2008, in a 19-5 win at La Salle.
The Spiders had a seven-shot advantage (32-25) and got to 21 of the 32 ground ball opportunities in the contest.
Senior goalie Emily Boyce (Middletown, Maryland) made four saves and got the win (2-3) for Richmond. Flames goalie Juliann Elmer made 15 saves
Richmond will host a pair of games next week, with Old Dominion visiting Wednesday evening starting at 5 p.m. and James Madison playing at Robins Stadium at 6 p.m. Friday.
