Pugh Captures Third SoCon Defensive Weekly Award
03/10/2015 | Men's Lacrosse
Richmond goalie Benny Pugh (Powhatan, Virginia / Woodberry Forest School) has been named the Southern Conference Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week, for games of March 3-8, the league office announced on Tuesday, as chosen by the conference office.
Pugh has been named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week three of the five weeks of the season to this point.
Pugh turned in a shutout in the first ever conference game in SoCon history, as Richmond topped VMI 20-1 on Saturday. For the first time in his career, he played for more than a half and did not give up a goal in the outing. He recorded seven saves and added four ground balls in 42:40 played for his third win of the season.
Pugh leads the SoCon in goals-against average (6.73) and save percentage (63.1 percent) while ranking fourth nationally in both categories.
He is the second person to win a SoCon Defensive weekly honor, as sophomore Mitch Goldberg (Damascus, Maryland) won the Offensive Player of the Week on January 24.
Richmond plays Wednesday at Mount St. Mary's at 4 p.m. before hosting No. 2 North Carolina on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Robins Stadium.
