UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - From the sight of a 30-foot spider enveloping you on four video boards prior to tipoff to a number of new fan experience initiatives and five sell-out crowds, the Robins Center boasted a great season in 2014-15.
In the second year after a $17-million dollar renovation, the Robins Center continued to prove that it boasts one of the best fan experiences and home-court advantages in college basketball.
"The Robins Center is an incredible place to play basketball," head coach Chris Mooney said. "We have a tremendous home-court advantage here and our fans seem to love the in-game experience. It's just a great place for college basketball."
This season, new intro videos featured updated highlights throughout the season along with the famous spider video that integrated spine-tingling clips of gigantic spiders with footage of Richmond's live spider feeding on her prey.
Fans delighted at the new offerings in concessions with specialty stands for healthy fare. New giveaways and promotions meant that every game offered something new for fans of all ages, including a Red Out against George Washington where every seat was offered a red "One Richmond" shirt.
Richmond boasted an average attendance of 5,749, ranking fourth in the Atlantic 10. In 2015, five A-10 games were sold out, even the season finale against Saint Louis with students on spring break.
Stadium Journey came to town this February and reviewed the overall game experience in the Robins Center. The site gave UR an overall score of 4.1 out of 5, tying for the best score of any Atlantic 10 home arena.
The home-court advantage was featured nationally as six home games were broadcast around the country, and all but three games were televised at least regionally or locally. Richmond's double-overtime win over #22 VCU was beamed to over 410,000 viewers on ESPN2.
Richmond finished the regular season with a record of 14-3 at home, including 8-1 in A-10 play. UR is now 78-18 at home over the last six years and has won six of the last seven home games against ranked teams.
