Women's Lacrosse Falls in Second Half at Oregon
03/15/2015 | Women's Lacrosse
EUGENE, Ore. -- Three Spiders came away with three points each, but the Oregon Ducks had too much offense in a 15-11 Richmond road loss 2,400 miles away at Oregon's Papé Field Sunday afternoon in non-conference women's lacrosse action.
Junior Emily Newman (New Albany, Ohio) came away with three goals, while senior Anna Jeszeck (Cortlandt Manor, New York) had two goals and an assist, and senior Emily Doyle (Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey) produced three assists in the contest in the Pacific Northwest.
Oregon outscored Richmond by two goals in both halves, despite the Spiders scoring first in both periods.
"We didn't take care of our possessions and Oregon took advantage of that," said UR head coach Allison Kwolek. "We were also slow to come out fighting. Oregon is a great team and they executed their game plan really well."
Richmond got on the board first when Newman scored just 33 seconds into the game on a free position goal, the first of six free position scores for the Spiders in the game, one shy of the season high seven, set in the Liberty win on 2/28. After an Oregon goal tied it, sophomore Emily Castle (Annapolis, Maryland) scores with just under 22 minutes in the opening half to give the Spiders a 2-1 lead.
The Ducks scored the next four goals and never gave up the lead. Richmond trailed 7-5 at the half.
The Spiders had just four fewer shots then Oregon (24-20), but won 17 of the 28 draws in the game. Oregon had two fewer turnovers (16-14), but the Spiders only mustered three saves on Oregon shots on goal in the loss.
Egizi put home her first goal just 93 seconds into the start of the second half, but the one goal was the slimmest margin the Spiders could get it to in the second half.
For the third-straight game, freshman Kim Egizi (Westwood, Massachusetts) scored two goals.
Five Spiders had multi-point games, as senior Bailey Zerr (Denver, Colorado) scored two goals for Richmond.
Senior goalie Emily Boyce (Middletown, Maryland) took the loss (3-5) after securing two saves in the contest in a little over 38 minutes played.
The Spiders will return to the East Coast and play at William & Mary Friday at 7 p.m.
