03/21/2015 | Women's Lacrosse
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Twice Richmond women's lacrosse put together 4-0 goal-scoring runs Friday night, but William & Mary scored scored with less than a minute to go to force overtime and an Ellen Shaffrey goal with 1:20 in the overtime period gave the Tribe a home win over the visiting Spiders at Martin Family Stadium in a wild non-conference game. Richmond drops to 3-6 on the season, falling in their last three contests.
Richmond seniors Emily Doyle (HoHo-Kus, New Jersey) and Anna Jeszeck (Cortlandt Manor, New York) scored three goals each, while Doyle added a pair of assists in the late loss.
After the Tribe scored first about seven minutes in, Richmond pulled off four straight goals from four different players over the next 16 minutes of game time, keeping the Tribe out of the net in the span.
A free-position goal with a little more than four minutes left cut the Spiders lead to two at the intermission 4-2.
William & Mary started the second half with four goals in the first seven minutes for a 6-4 lead, but the Spiders solved the halftime adjustment and post four goals of their own to flip the lead back to 8-6.
The Tribe scored the next two to tie the game at eight with 7:31 remaining in regulation. Doyle's goal with 5:36 remaining put the Spiders up a goal, but William & Mary posted a goal just nine seconds later off the draw to tie it again.
Jeszeck scored at the 2:55 mark, but Michelle Goss found the cage with 49 seconds to go and force the extra period.
In overtime, Richmond was called for the only yellow card of the night, which resulted in a play advantage for the Tribe, and they scored the game winner with the extra player with just 43 seconds later and Richmond could not equalize in the last 80 seconds before the period ended.
The home team has won the last seven in a row in the series.
The Spiders will host a pair of games next weekend to open the Atlantic 10 Conference portion of the schedule. Richmond hosts St. Bonaventure Friday morning at 11 a.m. before a home game with Saint Joseph's Sunday, March 29 starting at 1 p.m.
