Minnesota Edges Richmond In Slugfest, 13-12

COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team scored the game's final eight runs, but the Minnesota Golden Gophers held on to beat UR, 13-12, at Shepherd Stadium in Colonial Heights, Va. on Tuesday afternoon.
With the loss, Richmond falls to 6-7 on the season overall, while Minnesota improves to 7-9 on the year. The two teams will conclude their two-game, midweek series on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Shepherd Stadium.
Freshman OF Kyle Adams had the best game of his young career, going 4-for-5 with two home runs, three RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore DH Kurtis Brown had a pair of hits, including a double, and drove in four runs, while OF Jansen Fraser hit a three-run homer. Freshman 2B Daniel Brumbaugh had two hits and one RBI in the loss.
On the mound, LHP Zak Sterling got the start on a staff day for Richmond, tossing three shutout innings. Freshman RHP Keenan Bartlett and senior LHP Zach Grossfeld combined to throw 3.2 scoreless innings of relief, striking out three. RHP Peter Bayer (0-2) took the loss for the Spiders.
Leading 1-0 in the bottom of the third, Richmond pushed it's advantage to 3-0 on a two-out, two-run double to left field off the bat of Brown.
The Golden Gophers exploded on the top of the fourth, however, scoring seven times to take a 7-3 lead. In the bottom of the frame, Adams hit a solo homer, the first of his career, over the fence in right center to cut the Minnesota advantage to 7-4.
Two innings later, the Gophers again put up a big number, scoring six runs in the top of the sixth to push the lead over UR to 13-4. Richmond showed no quit despite the nine-run deficit, chipping away with one runs in the bottom of the inning on a RBI single from Brumbaugh.
In the top of the seventh, the Spiders continued to whittle away at the Minnesota lead, pushing across four runs to make the score 13-9. After a two-run single from Brown, Adams blasted his second homer of the day, a two-run shot, deep over the fence in right field.
Next inning, Fraser cut the lead to just one run, crushing a three-run homer to right center, making the Gopher lead 13-12 headed to the ninth.
In the final frame, Richmond had two runners on with one out, but a 6-4-3 double play ended the rally, securing the 13-12 victory for Minnesota.
The Richmond Spiders will wrap up it's two-game series with Minnesota on Wednesday at Shepherd Stadium in Colonial Heights, Va. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
