Spider Baseball Crushes Minnesota, 13-2

COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team crushed the Minnesota Golden Gophers, 13-2, at Shepherd Stadium in Colonial Heights, Va. on Wednesday afternoon.
With the split of the two-game, midweek series, Richmond improves to 7-7 on the season overall, while Minnesota falls to 7-10 on the year.
1B Doug Kraeger led the offensive charge for the Spiders, going 4-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. SS Tyler Beckwith went 2-for-4 with a homer, three RBI and three runs scored, while CF Michael Morman also hit a homer, knocking in a pair of runs and scoring three times.
3B Matt Dacey had two RBI in the victory, while LF Kyle Adams and C Aaron Newman each drove in a run. On the day, Richmond had eight different players with at least one hit and seven players who scored at least one run.
On the mound, a pair of freshmen had very impressive outings for the Spiders. RHP Justin Garcia (1-0) earned his first collegiate victory in the start, pitching five strong innings. Garcia allowed just two runs while striking out five. Out of the bullpen, RHP Brendan McGuigan tossed the final four frames to notch his first save, striking out four while allowing just two hits.
After a RBI single from Kraeger gave the Spiders a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, Minnesota took the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning.
The Spiders answered immediately, scoring five runs over the next two frames to stake a 6-2 lead after four complete innings.
In the sixth, Richmond blew the game wide open, scoring seven runs while sending 13 batters to the plate in the frame. The seven-runs marked the 10th time already this season that the Spiders have scored four or more runs in one innings.
Richmond will begin Atlantic 10 conference play this weekend when the team plays host to the George Mason Patriots at The Diamond in Richmond, Va. The two squads will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. and one game on Sunday at 12 p.m.
