Richmond Sweeps George Mason In A-10 Doubleheader
03/22/2015 | Baseball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team got it's Atlantic 10 conference schedule off to a great start on Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader of George Mason at The Diamond on Saturday.
The Spiders won game one, 10-6, in 10 innings on a walk-off grand slam from OF Michael Morman, before dominating the Patriots, 8-1, in game two.
With the sweep, Richmond improves to 9-7 on the season overall and to 2-0 in A-10 play, while Mason falls to 7-11 on the year and to 0-2 in the league.
“I thought we played very well today,” Richmond head coach Tracy Woodson said following the two-game sweep. “ Aside from a couple of missteps in the first game, I thought we played fantastic. Anytime you can sweep a doubleheader, especially in conference, it's a good day.”
Morman had a monster day for the Spiders, going a combined 5-for-7 with a walk-off grand slam, a double, seven RBI and two runs scored on the day. SS Tyler Beckwith combined to go 4-for-8 with a homer, two doubles, three RBI and four runs scored for Richmond.
On the mound, RHP Ryan Cook had a solid start for the Spiders in game one, pitching six innings and allowing just one earned run. RHP Ray Harron (1-0) earned the victory in the lid lifter.
In game two, LHP Zak Sterling (3-1) had another great outing, tossing 6.2 innings of one run baseball, striking out eight. RHP James Lively pitched the final 2.1 innings to earn his second save of the season.
Home runs keyed the Richmond offense in game one, as 3B Matt Dacey and Beckwith each had homers to help the Spiders take a 6-3 lead in to the top of the ninth inning.
The Patriots rallied in the top of the frame, however, scoring three times to force extra innings. In the 10th, Morman came to the plate with the bases loaded, looking to win it for the Spiders.
Swinging at the first pitch he saw, the Valparaiso transfer crushed a fastball deep over the left-field fence at The Diamond, sending the Spiders in to hysterics with the walk-off grand slam.
Richmond was able to take the momentum from the first game in to game two, seizing control of the game in the second inning with a three spot, taking an early 3-0 lead.
The Spiders added insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh, with the key hit coming from freshman C Brandon Johnson, who laced a two-run single to left field.
George Mason was never able to stage a rally in game two and Richmond went on to defeat the Patriots and sweep the doubleheader with an 8-1 victory.
The Richmond Spiders will conclude their three-game, Atlantic 10 series with Mason tomorrow at 12 p.m. at The Diamond in Richmond, Va.
