03/26/2015 | Women's Tennis
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The 8-3 Georgetown Hoyas came to Richmond having won four of their last five matches. The Spiders had their six-game winning streak on the line. Richmond women's tennisteam met the challenge with Thursday's 4-3 win, improving to10-2 on the season and extending their win streak to an impressive seven straight.
The Spiders struck first with a come-from-behind win at #2 doubles to clinch the doubles point. Brittany Boys and Katya Salas were down 5-4 before staging the dramatic finish and closing out the Hoyas 8-6.
“The singles were all hard-fought today,” remarked Coach Mark Wesselink.
Kelsey Williams put it all on the line with the team score tied 3-all. After losing a heart-breaker first set 7-6 (4), she used her big groundstrokes and superior movement to knot the match 6-3 in the second set. Williams stepped up her intensity and closed out the match and win for the Spiders 6-2 in the third set.
“I am so impressed with Kelsey's play under pressure. I've lost track of how many matches she's clinched for us. It's tough being the last one out there but she rises to the occasion,” said Wesselink. “We have some things to work out in doubles and some of our players mental toughness needs to improve. But overall I am feeling good about our fight and commitment to get even stronger.”
The Spiders face UMBC on Suanday at 10am at the Westhampton Tennis Complex.
