03/29/2015 | Women's Tennis
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Cold weather makes for tough play and forces contests to be played for the clinch. Brittany Boys and Katya Salas got the Spiders started with a convincing 6-3 win at #2 doubles, and Emily Gitman and Gaby Rosales won the doubles point at #3 coming from 4-1 down to win 6-4. Richmond rode those triumphs and closed out the Sunday contest with UMBC, scoring a 4-2 win, improving to 11-2 record on the season. The victory was the Spiders' eighth straight.
“A different doubles team or player seems to step up every match for us," said a smiling head coach Mark Wesselink. "Boys and Salas have come up big in our last two matches. UMBC played us tough to the last point. We were lucky to weather a slow start and pull this one out. Hopefully a lesson learned for the team.”
Rosales and Kelsey Williams continued their strong play putting the Spiders in a position to win with dominating singles performances.Closing the gate on the Retrievers, Boys came from 0-3 down in the third set to clinch the win for the Spiders in a tiebreak, 7-4.
Wesselink remarked, “Britt's win with the match on the line was impressive. It's some of the best tennis I've seen her play.”
The Spiders face East Carolina April 3 at 1pm at the Westhampton Tennis Complex.
