UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Spider women's tennis team stood strong on Senior Day against a Liberty team boasting a program-best record. The Flames came away with a 5-2 victory on a cool, overcast afternoon at the Westhampton Tennis Complex, dropping Richmond's regular season record to 11-6.
Senior Melissa Kandinata teamed with junior Anna Abadias Morales to win a hard-fought match at #1 doubles, 8-7 (7-4). At #3 doubles, Kelsey Williams and Emily Gitman lost a nail-biter, 8-6, as Liberty secured the doubles point.
Morales and Williams took singles wins for the Spiders. Morales was particularly impressive, dispatching Liberty's Mariela Hassey in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, evening the match at 1-1. Williams, timing the ball well, outlasted Nicola Wellman, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5). Liberty won the #2-#5 positions to clinch the match.
“We were in a position to beat a team with a program history best 18-4 record but just couldn't quite close them out," remarked coach Mark Wesselink. "I feel like we will be ready for A-10's after a few days to fine-tune our games.”
The Atlantic 10 women's tennis championships are set for April 16-19 in Charlottesville, Va.
