LEXINGTON, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team won at VMI for the first time since 2009 on Wednesday night, defeating the Keydets, 10-5, in Lexington, Va.
With the victory, Richmond improves to 19-11 on the season overall, while VMI falls to 10-20 on the year.
OF Tanner Stanley batted 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI to lead the Spiders, while 2B Daniel Brumbaugh went 2-for-4 with a home run, a RBI and four runs scored. OF Michael Morman had two hits and two RBI, while DH Kyle Adams had a pair of hits and drove in a run. C Aaron Newman also had a RBI in the win for Richmond.
On a staff day for the UR pitchers, RHP Peter Bayer (1-3) earned his first win of the season with two shutout innings of relief. RHP Robbie Baker worked a scoreless inning, while RHP Keenan Bartlett pitched two shutout innings, striking out a pair. RHP Ray Harron worked a scoreless ninth for the Spiders.
In the top of the third inning, the Spiders jumped out to an early, 2-0 lead at VMI. Stanley started the scoring for Richmond with a RBI single through the right side of the infield. On the next batter, Morman made a great read on a wild pitch and scored easily from third base to give UR a 2-0 advantage.
With Richmond leading 3-0 in the bottom of the second, the Keydets answered with four runs, taking a one-run lead over the Spiders, 4-3.
The scoring continued in the third when Adams clubbed a RBI single to center field, tying the game at 4-4. In the fourth, Morman gave the Spiders a lead they wouldn't relinquish with a RBI double down the left field line.
Two innings later, Brumbaugh gave Richmond a 6-4 lead with his first collegiate home run, smashing a solo shot over the right-field fence. With his homer, Brumbaugh became the 10th Spider to hit at least one home run so far this season. Four batters later, Stanley pushed the UR lead over the Keydets to 8-4 with a two-run double to left.
After VMI cut the Spider lead to three in the bottom of the sixth, Richmond responded in the top of the eighth inning. Morman recorded his second RBI of the day, plating a run with a single to right field, making the UR advantage, 9-5.
In the top of the ninth inning, the Spiders added a run to their lead on a two-out, RBI single from Newman. Headed to the bottom of the ninth, Richmond held a 10-5 lead over the Keydets.
In the bottom half, the Keydets were able to get two runners on base, but RHP Ray Harron stopped any potential rally, inducing a game-ending fielder's choice to secure the win.
The Richmond Spiders will be back in action this weekend when the team plays host to Rhode Island for a three-game, Atlantic 10 series. The set gets underway on Friday at Pitt Field with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
